A simple four-phase development framework for renewable energy projects

The percentage of the UK’s energy from renewables has grown considerably in the last decade, from 10.7 percent in 2014 to 39.5 percent in 2023, according to data from the National Grid.

In 2024, development of energy projects in the UK is a dynamic and sometimes turbulent business. From reforms of the grid connection process to planning and political turmoil, itsmore important than ever to truly understand the best approach to creating feasible projects that turn into valuable assets.

So how do you do that in an already overcrowded sector?

Queequeg is a developer that aims to do things differently. We do so by taking the entire process back to basics, while using our incredible in-house expertise to ensure a sustainable momentum throughout the project lifecycle.

A four-phase project framework

We have a simple four-phase framework that aims to reduce the time spent on each project so we can get to ‘ready to build’ (RTB) in the shortest possible period.

First, our in-house due diligence establishes if a project is going to stand the test of time before it even gets off the ground. We’re not in the business of wasting time – especially that of all our valuable partners and landowners.

Once we know a project is viable, our ‘proof of concept’ phase allows us to interact with the statutory bodies responsible for planning and grid to properly start the development process.

We all know the pain of this process plus the possible delays and planning jargon that gets thrown about. Wouldn’t it be terrific if the team representing you naturally spoke that jargon at an advanced level? Queequeg can quickly and succinctly cut through the noise and get to the heart of any hold-up or problem. Our experience allows us to spot issues quickly and resolve these before they escalate further.

Detailed engineering, design, and planning

Our next phase is feasibility and detailed engineering and design. Our engineering team is built upon a wealth of expert knowledge and experience which means our designs are realistic and bankable. We know the designs we submit in planning are the ones that are going to be built.

Our final phase is the completion of legals and planning. It’s not a snappy name but it is the most important phase of our framework. This is where you see a huge increase in activity at the site as we prepare the planning application. We work hand in hand with local contractors to ensure each of our projects are respectful throughout the construction and operation periods.

In all our phases we have a dedicated point of contact for land, planning, engineering, and delivery. Allowing for enough resource in house ensures that each project is given the correct level of detail it requires.

Leadership, transparency and accountability

Away from our projects, our company is always working on its own internal leadership framework. We look to push and challenge our people to take the next step in their career and develop their skills beyond their current remit. We’re a team of self-starters that hold each other accountable and aim for that gold standard day in and day out.

We’re also looking to make the sector more transparent. Development can be incredibly tricky in the UK, and historically has always been a bit of a cloak and dagger world. We want to be at the cutting edge of renewable energy development and that means being open to collaborating with others in the industry.

Development done badly can leave a sour taste in people’s mouths. It can be a lot of broken promises and secrets. But not here at Queequeg.

We want to give developers a better name and to be a trail blazer with an accuracy and focus in everything we do – just like our namesake in Herman Melville’s classic novel, “Moby Dick”.
